Preventing physical abuse in children during the holiday season

Due to increased pressure, time commitments, and financial demands during the holiday season, there may be an increased risk of physical abuse in children. If you are in an abusive relationship or are a survivor of domestic violence you are prone to facing increased stress during the festive season.

Some of the ways in which your children may be overburdened include:

  1. Putting too much responsibility on the children because of the many things that you need to do at this time of year.
  2. Leaving the children home alone when they’re not ready or prepared to be left alone.
  3. Giving children chores that are not age-appropriate because you are over-stressed or have too much to do.

To avoid this:

  1. Seek help. Ask trusted friends, neighbors, and family members to assist you in running some errands. Do not shy away from seeking help.
  2. Share responsibilities with others eg trusted friends and family members.
  3. Take a breather. When you feel that you are on the verge of losing it with your child, take a break to de-stress and regain calm.
  4. Take note of your triggers and handle them instead of suppressing them.
  5. Plan your itinerary well in advance. If you are a survivor of domestic violence, you may consider starting a new holiday tradition for your children. Get views from your children on their preferences and let them know that their comfort matters.
  6. Seek help from your therapist.
